ADVANCED HEAVY TRUCK DRIVING

Heavy truck drivers operate trucks with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) capacity of more than 26,000 pounds to transport goods from one location to another. These drivers deliver goods over intercity routes, often spanning several states.

Career Options

In addition to becoming a heavy truck driver, people who complete this course of study can go on to become forklift operators, diesel technicians, warehouse associates, training instructors, terminal managers, bus drivers, dispatchers, and mechanics.

Requirements

Before entering the program, students must:

  • Comply with state requirements that may involve a criminal background check and completion of a training program meeting federal content requirements.
  • Good hearing, 20/40 vision or better (may not be colorblind), and normal use of arms and legs.
  • Not allowed for interstate truck drivers: epilepsy, diabetes controlled by insulin, or the use of any controlled substances not prescribed by a licensed physician
  • No felony convictions involving the use of a motor vehicle, a crime involving drugs, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusing to submit to an alcohol test required by a state
  • A driver must not have left the scene of a crime or caused a fatality through negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Complete one of Job Corps' basic Information Technology career technical training programs.
  • Have a Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) A+ certification.
  • Be within 4 weeks of your 21st birthday.
  • Pass a Department of Transportation drug test, physical exam, and ergonomics test.
  • Have a valid driver’s license with at least 18 months of driving experience.
  • Have an original Social Security card and an original birth certificate.
  • Complete the core curriculum with passing scores on all written and performance tests.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete the core curriculum with passing scores on all written and performance tests.
  • Have strong math and reading skills.

  • Have health clearance from the Job Corps center where they received basic training.

  • Complete a Job Corps basic career technical training program.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Have a positive attendance and progress record.
  • Have a positive behavior record with no major incidents in the past 90 days.
  • Have a clean criminal record.
  • Have a clean driving record.
  • Have health clearance from the Job Corps center where they received basic training.
  • Complete a successful phone, in-person, or videoconference interview.

Credentials

As a Job Corps student, you will have the opportunity to earn credentials in your training area that may lead to greater employment opportunities, higher wages, and promotions.

Students who complete a program in the Transportation training area can earn nationally recognized credentials and/or state licensure. Credentials such as these show that students have the skills and knowledge to work in transportation, logistics, and customer service.
